Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it issues its first advice on the medications.
Given more than one billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.
Per forecasts, more than two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.
"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are significant obstacles to broad access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, says the body.
GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity
Even in the current best projected outlook, the supply of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.
The guideline calls on countries and companies to increase access, by measures such as voluntary licensing.
Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.
