A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
