The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
